Richard "Rick" Mitchell, 58, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away Tuesday , June 5, 2012 at his home in Grand Forks. Richard "Rick" Mitchell was born May 29, 1954 in Grand Forks, ND, th e son of Raymond and Eleanor (Jumer) Mitchell. He attended St. Michael 's Elementary School, Valley Junior High, and Central High School in G rand Forks, ND. He was active in sports, and was a letterman in footba ll and wrestling. He graduated from Grand Forks Central High School i n 1972. He then attended Mayville State University, and played colleg e football for the Mayville State Comets. Rick was employed at the Uni versity of North Dakota in the Building and Grounds Department for man y years. He was on the night crew painting team and then in custodia l services. He also performed various other jobs in the community, inc luding working at Norby's Work Perks as an on-call common laborer. Ric k was an avid sports fan. He especially enjoyed UND sports and the Vik ings football team. Often, he attended the Frozen Four playoff games w hen the UND hockey team was playing in Minneapolis. His claim to fam e was when he was young, he and his boyhood friend, Steve Weiser, woul d retrieve the football kicker's tee for UND's football games at Memor ial Stadium when Earl Mann was a kicker. Rick was active in the Democr atic Party, and was very knowledgeable about current events in politic s. He enjoyed talking about the state of affairs in sports and politic s over a beer at a local pub. He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, who died at bi rth. Funeral Liturgy: 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 14, 2012 in the Gregory J. N orman Funeral Chapel. Visitation: One hour prior to the liturgy in the funeral chapel on Thu rsday.
