Dobberpuhl, Marvin

Marvin Henry Dobberpuhl was born May 1, 1921, in Carlos Township, MN, the son of Henry and Louise (Drussell) Dobberpuhl. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria. He grew up in Carlos Township and attended school at District 36 and later at Central High School in Alexandria. Following his schooling, Marvin worked as a hired hand for local farmers.

On June 5, 1942, Marvin was united in marriage to Elmera (Larson) at the Fahlun Lutheran Church Parsonage, near Nelson. The couple made their home near Carlos. They were blessed with one child, Marvin, Jr., who sadly died in infancy. Marvin joined the United States Army and served in the 95th Infantry Division. Marvin was deployed and served as an Infantry Battery Supply Staff Sergeant during WWII. He served in France, six weeks after Normandy, and also in Germany.

Following his discharge, Marvin returned to Minnesota where he continued a long career in farming. He had his own seed company and produce business, sold insurance for the Moe & Urness Insurance Co., and did custom combining and baling.

Marvin served his community as a member of the Carlos Township Board (18yrs) and Knute Nelson Memorial Home Board. He also volunteered his time at Fahlun Lutheran Church and cemetery. Marvin was a contributor to the Alexandria Technical College Scholarship program, donating many scholarships throughout the years. These scholarships will continue in his name.

Marvin loved mathematics, puzzles, and playing cribbage. He liked horses and spending time fishing. A unique hobby for Marvin involved antique knitting machines. He collected, repaired, and built new machines out of old parts. He kept his machines in working order and made stockings, scarves and stocking caps for friends and family.

Marvin was united in marriage to Fyrn Jensen on June 12, 1993. The couple enjoyed traveling to destinations such as Africa, Alaska, Holy Land, Norway and many more. They were also members of the Vikingland Sam's Chapter and loved to travel with their RV.

On Monday, October 21, 2013, Marvin died at the age of ninety-two years.

His wife, Elmera Dobberpuhl; wife, Fyrn Dobberpuhl; son, Marvin Dobberpuhl, Jr.; parents, Henry and Louise Dobberpuhl; and sister, Frances Hedlof, preceded him in death.

Marvin is survived by his sister, Marion Dahlke and husband, Kenneth, of Alexandria; three nieces and one nephew, Janet Amundson, Ron Hanson, Laura Capp and Linda Sundgaard; and many great and great, great nieces and nephews
