Richard "Dick" Steinhoff, 73, of Helena, passed away on Aug. 4, 2022, at Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula.

Per Dad's request there will be no services but a celebration of life will be held later this fall.

Dick was born June 19, 1949, in Brooten, Minn. to John Steinhoff and Agnes Rooney. He grew up on the family farm in Sauk Center, Minn. with his eight siblings and moved to Conrad, Mont. his senior year and graduated from Conrad High School. After graduating he was drafted into the Army and stationed at Fort Riley, Kan. before he was discharged.

In July 1974 he married Sunny Freeman and made their home in Valier where Dick worked for Pondera County Canal & Reservoir Company. In 1980 Dick and Sunny opened Howard's Pizza in Shelby which they operated until 1996. The restaurant was a family affair where the entire family had the privilege of learning the value of hard work. After selling the restaurant Dick worked construction for a few years until a stroke in 2001 and continued to live in Shelby.

In March 2022 he moved to The Legacy Assisted Living in Helena. Dick loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. In his later years he enjoyed baking and making his famous "snacking stix," salami and Tom & Jerry batter.

Dick is survived by his former wife Sunny Steinhoff; his three children Angel (Dan) Pipinich of Redmond, Wash., John (Laura) Steinhoff of Helena, and Glen Steinhoff (Kerry Hanson) of Bozeman; grandkids Jacqueline, Christopher, Katrina and Laila; siblings Vince Steinhoff, Delores Meyers and Theresa Fiddler.

The family would suggest memorials be made to the Montana Veteran's Memorial Flag and Park in Shelby or a veteran's organization of your choice.
