In one letter from Lil to her sister Kate Gaffaney (who was living with husband Jim, daughter Julia, and son Ambrose on his farm) in November 1943, she says, "Timmy came home in Sep. He had another attack of Malaria and had written that he was just out of the hosp. I'd been pretty worried about him when one day he stepped off the bus. He had come by Air Pacific across the Pacific from Brisbane to San Francisco & had enough time to spend a week at home. He is rather thin, & older looking & quite nervous & restless. when he went back to Calif. he got Malaria again & was in the hosp in Santa Ana, then he was sent to Tucson Ariz. as a plane dispatcher à"

Tim officially died of encephalitis. He became ill in Seattle while on Air Force reserve maneuvers, returned home and became somewhat paralyzed and then developed other symptoms and died in a veteran's hospital. But his brother Martin ("Mike") said in a letter to Lyle Martin, " Timmy had a terribly sun stroke in 1969, and after lingering for a couple of months in the hospital died around Sept. 1, 1969."
