Robert became a priest May 25, 1958 in Pocatello, Idaho.

Robert L. Smith, a retired timber employee and former priest, died of an apparent heart attack at his Grangeville home. He was 63.

He was born in 1932 at Pocatello to William and Lucy McKinney Smith.

For many years, he served as a priest in the Catholic church in Idaho. He was involved in education and parish ministry.

In his early years as a priest he started the sports program at Sacred Heart Grade School at Boise. He eventually left the priesthood but remained involved with the church, especially the parish choir.

He married Carol Duman in August 1976.

The couple lived on the Camas Prairie from the time of their marriage until his death. He was employed in the timber industry until retiring in 1990.

He enjoyed sporting events, golf, bowling, travel and living in Grangeville.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Noland Funeral Home at Grangeville. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at Grangeville.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. William Dohman as celebrant.

The family suggests memorials be made to Sts. Peter and Paul School, 330 South B St., Grangeville, Idaho 83530.
