James Rooney is in the 1870 U.S. census of Ward 2, St. Anthony, city of Minneapolis as a laborer. He was 21 - b. about 1849 - in Canada. Alongside him are his sister "Kate," married to William Martin and their two kids and William's brother John, brother Michael, age 23, and perhaps a cousin, Patrick Killeen, age 40, born in Ireland and probably a Civil War soldier at Ft. Snelling in 1865, born in Galway according to the war record. James's naturalization record is in the Pope County courthouse, dated March 29, 1897 and witnessed by Thomas J. Rooney and Joseph C. Egan. riginally published August 1998, Padua Cemetery, by Ginny Walz Borgerding James Rooney was born April 29, 1848, in Canada, the son of John and Mary (McCool) Rooney. He was the fourth child of twelve children. James married Anna (Annie) Egan and they farmed just west of Padua, on the farm owned by Bob Streff in 1976. The big brick house, that still stands today on the farm, was built by James in 1911. James and Anna had seven children: Annie died on March 23, 1914. She had a heart condition and died from complications. James continued to farm until 1919 when he sold the farm and moved to Brooten. James died on June 10, 1926 from a stroke. After his death, sometime in the 1920's, his estate received the farm back at Padua. It was resold again. Annie's brother Dennis Egan was married to James' sister, Mary Rooney. James and Annie's children, George, Martha Ann Young, Emily Frances, and granddaughter Marvel Lucile Rooney are buried in Padua. James' parents, brothers and sisters Catherine Martin, Michael J., Thomas T., William, Mary Egan, Elizabeth Egan, and Annie's brother Dennis Egan are all buried in Padua. |
